Neurotheology and the Believer’s Struggle with Sin

Jake Porter

Daring Ventures

This session offers a trauma-informed, neurobiological reading of Romans 6–8. Drs. Jake Porter and Windell Gill argue that Paul’s depiction of the believer’s inner struggle—especially in Romans 7—is a universal human experience, not a spiritual failure. Drawing from attachment science and affective neuroscience, they show that transformation occurs through relational attunement with the Spirit, with implications for sexual integrity and recovery from compulsive behaviors.

Professional Learning Objectives:

Identify the neurobiological and trauma-informed underpinnings of the internal struggle described in Romans 7, reframing it as a normative part of the believer's sanctification journey.

Explain how Spirit-led transformation, as outlined in Romans 8, aligns with neurobiological principles of lasting change—contrasting it with the ineffective cycle of shame-based, law-driven behavior management.

Apply a neurotheological lens to support individuals navigating sexual integrity challenges, integrating biblical theology with clinical and pastoral strategies for sustainable spiritual and behavioral change.
