One of the most challenging steps for couples is what to do with sex after betrayal. While the knowledge of the sexual acts is devastating, research shows how lies, gaslighting, and chronic breaches of trust commonly complicate a couple’s ability to risk and reengage sexually. Without a clear plan couples split, stay angry, engage in obligatory sex, remain stuck, or become disconnected roommates. Using the Early Recovery Couples Empathy Model (ERCEM), Dr. Sheri will demonstrate how empathy, ownership and truth-telling can help couples listen with their hearts and grieve losses, while taking steps toward posttraumatic growth.
Professional Learning Objectives:
Discuss common roadblocks of healing from betrayal trauma and how three key components honest with self and others, sincere ownership, and respectful grieving over the harm are “must haves” for a couple to heal well.
Identify the three-step process of ERCEM which create robust steps of co-occurring change including empathy, safety, containment, validation and grief; thereby rebuilding relational integrity while taking active steps toward posttraumatic growth.
Learn how disenfranchised grief needs to be processed by the betrayed partner and how early intervention provides stabilization to the couple and a clear path of restoration to both individuals.
